Monosyllabicization: patterns of evolution in Asian
languages» (
https://hal.inria.fr/file/index/docid/43...ov2009.pdf ),
The issue has been raised whether sesquisyllabic languages could contrast fused clusters, CCV(C), and nonfused clusters, CəCV(C), e.g. /spa/ and /səpa/. Such a contrast has been hypothesized for Old Chinese (Baxter and Sagart, in preparation), whereas the reconstruction proposed by Ferlus 2009 does not require this device. To my knowledge, a contrast between fused and nonfused clusters is not found in any of the languages where sesquisyllabic structure can still be observed.
